Milan aims to promote sustainable mobility; however, inadequate infrastructure and irresponsible behaviour have caused a ~40% rise in bicycle crashes. Via Bici is a community-driven service that enhances urban cycling safety through the "safety in numbers" principle. Doubling the number of cyclists reduces the risk of crashes per kilometre by ~35%.

Via Bici provides navigation services that direct cyclists along shared routes, minimising accidents and encouraging cycling as the preferred mode of urban transportation. It enables cyclists to report issues directly to authorities, offering a feedback channel with a reward system to incentivise participation. The data collected from cyclists helps mobility management authorities improve infrastructure and create safer cycling routes. Additionally, expert cyclists serve as ambassadors, guiding the community on safer and more enjoyable routes.

Via Bici was awarded the IF Design Student Award 2023, and the concept is currently being developed by Politecnico di Milano for implementation.
